Two fires, in Graz and Maria Lankowitz, ended fatally in Styria on Friday evening. An 81-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman died in the flames, a woman was saved. Now the causes of the devastating fires have been determined.
A remote, small farm in Maria Lankowitz (Voitsberg district) was the scene of a serious fire in the night on Friday: a retired person could only be restored to death of her house.
“House in full fire”
At 2.30 am eight fire brigades were warned in the 2700-residents community in West Styr. “When we arrived, the house was already in full fire, a penetration was no longer possible,” says Marcel Wintscher from the Voitsberg Volunteer Fire Brigade. The fire had probably undiscovered itself in the beginning – the fire extinguishing was done immediately.
In the early morning hours the sad certainty became: within the body of a 71-year-old woman, probably in the bedroom. A rescue was no longer possible. “The house is completely burned down, everything is in ruins and ashes,” Wintscher reports. The police want to be on the basis of the identity of the dead woman: that is why an autopsy has been ordered.
81-year-old to be recovered from flames
The same applies to another dramatic fire evening – this time in the Andrritz district of Graz. Here an 81-year-old man could only be restored to death of the flames.
When the fire broke out on the top floor of the house, the two residents still slept deep and sturdy. The alarm went in the Graz Professional Fire Brigade around 2:30 am 26 forces hurried to the site with seven vehicles. During arrival there was already a room in the fire and windows were also broken. The emergency services then noted that there was still a woman in the apartment.
For them the salvation came just in time: with a turntable ladder you could restore it from the attic. But not her 81-year-old man who was later found dead in bed. He probably inhaled the poisonous gases in his sleep.
Two other residents of the house were taken to a hospital. The couple, the neighbors of the victim, remained unharmed. The fire brigade was able to pour fire after about two hours.
Causes were technical defects
In both cases, the State Criminal Police Office could find a technical defect. In Maria Lankowitz a fridge may have been decisive, a defective battery in Graz. The material damage is huge.
