Baddrama on Lake Constance: A 25-year-old man from Middle Austria drowned on Monday evening near Bregenzer Wocherhafen. Another man who came to the aid of the bereaved man almost paid for his efforts with his life. The alarmed emergency services were able to rescue the helper ashore. All help came too late for the 25-year-old.
According to the first information, the man was visiting Vorarlberg with relatives. On Monday evening, despite strong winds and accompanying waves, he wanted to go back into the water around 8.30 pm in the area of the Bregenzer Wocherhafen.
However, the young man quickly reached his physical limit and threatened to sink under the floodwaters. The 25-year-old began to call for help, after which other swimmers on the shore alerted rescuers. However, one of the eyewitnesses did not want to wait for the emergency services to arrive, jumped into the water and swam to the drowning person in the bay. Once there, however, the first responder also ran into trouble.
The alarmed water rescue was able to save the helper in time. The 25-year-old, on the other hand, went under and was only recovered from the water two hours later by the divers dead due to poor visibility due to wind, waves and heavy seaweed growth.
In addition to the Vorarlberg water rescue service, the fire brigade, the rescue service and the police with three boats, two helicopters were also involved in the operation.
