The sharp rise in food prices since the Russian invasion of Ukraine has exacerbated the already tense crisis situation in many countries due to the corona pandemic. Millions of people are on the brink of starvation. It hits the hardest who were already among the poorest.
Droughts such as the current one in the Horn of Africa or last year in Madagascar demonstrate the fatal effects of climate change, Welthungerhilfe Secretary-General Mathias Mogge said: “Anyone who has just under three dollars a day to survive can easy not to pay the doubling of bread prices.”
Armed conflict drives people into hunger and need
“Together with our European Alliance 2015 Alliance, we support people in need in Ukraine and refugees in neighboring countries such as Poland and the Republic of Moldova,” explains Welthungerhilfe President Marlehn Thieme.
The distribution of food and hygiene products was therefore central in the first weeks after the outbreak of the war, but now the aid is also being expanded with money issues: “At the same time, we are feeling the dramatic consequences of rising food prices in our other project countries. We are doubly challenged.”
In 2021 alone, Germany’s Welthungerhilfe supported approximately 16.6 million people in 36 countries with 526 projects abroad.
