Trend continues – 800 students continue to homeschool

Date:

Last year, Austria had more children in home schooling than ever before. And a trend reversal is not in sight: more than 800 schoolchildren in Styria have already registered for autumn.

Last school year, three times as many Austrian children were taught at home as usual. Fear of Corona on the one hand, protest against virus measures on the other, fueled the development, which caused criticism: social interaction was neglected.

This year more than 800 applications came in
There is no sign of a trend reversal yet: there are 817 registrations for the coming school year. “That’s an above-average value,” says Bernhard Just of the education department. By way of comparison: at the beginning of the past school year 1130 children and young people unsubscribed, at the end 951 remained. “There will be no more than the currently almost 820 applications,” explains Just. As the deadline has already passed, applications are now being checked.

There were many this year, especially among children of primary school age
The exam score has been good recently: 85 percent of the 558 students who took the so-called external exam this year passed. The children of primary school age in particular behaved well: only 22 of the 367 children continued on.

203 children failed the exam (190 children of preschool age did not have to participate at all). Simply: “They have to go back to school and finish the year again.” But some families just moved: “That’s where our responsibility ends.”
