Researchers have discovered a new blood type in France: so far it is only known to a single carrier who has “Gwada negative”. The woman cannot donate or receive blood.
The unusual blood type had already noticed an operation during a routine study in 2011. As the French blood institute explained, a “very special” and “unknown” antibody was found in the patient’s blood – but there were no technical possibilities to further investigate the phenomenon.
The secret was only revealed years later
Only years later, in 2019, a genetic mutation could be found in the case of a high-throughput sequence of the DNA and “the secret finally revealed,” the institute said. The mutated gene inherited the French woman with roots in the Guadeloupe from her father and mother.
According to the Blutinstitut, the 48th blood group system in the world was discovered. At the beginning of June the sensation was officially recognized by the International Society for Blood Transfusion.
The woman is “undoubtedly” the only person in the world with this blood type. Only her own blood is compatible – but you are now looking for other “gwada -negative” providers. This is the only way to improve care for people with rare blood groups.
