After Flood in the Valley – Fighting Together Against the Traces of a Nightmare

Date:

The traces of the devastation are still ubiquitous in the neighboring valley: the state of Carinthia and the AMS are now starting an employment project aimed at supporting the stormy region and the unemployed at the same time.

Children’s books, exercise books, clothes, Christmas decorations – many families’ belongings were washed from their homes in a devastating storm more than two weeks ago and are still scattered for several miles in the surrounding valley. Heaps of rubble with personal belongings pile up in front of the sports field in Treffen, which is still covered in mud and cannot be seen.

“The memories of the families have been washed away,” said Landesvice Gaby Schaunig, shocked during a local inspection with civil defense officer Daniel Fellner and AMS boss Peter Wedenig. There is no doubt that the clean-up work will continue for a long time to come. To lend a helping hand to the affected communities of Arriach and Treffen and at the same time give the unemployed a job, the trio started a special employment project.

20 job seekers arrive on Monday
As early as Monday, 20 Carinthians who have been looking for work for a long time will move to the disaster area. They will work there full-time for at least four months. “The project participants support the local construction sites with ground and clearing work in the green and agricultural areas. When the heavy equipment has had its day and fine work is required, they ensure that the existing infrastructure can be put back into service as quickly as possible,” explains Fellner.

The assignment to the respective work areas and the supervision will be taken over by four key figures with specialized training. “Among the participants are, for example, trained carpenters and electricians who can make optimal use of their professional knowledge”, adds Peter Wedenig.

The total cost of the project is approximately 365,000 euros, of which the AMS contributes 239,000 euros and the National Labor Market Office 83,000 euros. The state of Carinthia will also take over the share of the two municipalities – 43,000 euros. Schaunig: “In this way we ensure that no additional budgetary burdens are placed on the region, which is already ravaged by crises.” However, the financial management of the storm disaster can only be controlled with the support of the federal government, Schaunig and Fellner agree: “The federal government can help us here, don’t let them down any longer!”
