The German Backpacker, who was saved in the Australian wilderness after twelve days, has now reported emotionally from the hospital in Perth. “I am just infinitely grateful that I survived,” said the 26-year-old.
As reported, Carolina Wilga’s car was already discovered on Thursday, but the young woman initially missed a trail. Now the German has told what exactly happened. “Some may wonder why I left my car at all, even though I had water, food and clothing. The answer is: I had lost control of the car and had rolled a slope down.” In the accident, she seriously injured her head and then “completely confused” the car.
Then she got lost. Wilga has been traveling through Australia for two years and partly financed the journey through work in mines. “The thought of all the people who believed in me, looked for me and hoped that I gave myself the power to continue,” said the 26-year-old.
Mobile phone is disabled – Huge search
Wilga was discovered on Friday by the Australian Tania Henley on a path in the outback and was taken to the next place in her car. Until then, the young woman had drunk rain water and water from ponds and partially stayed in caves – with flowing rain and minus degrees, but also strong Australian sun.
The disappearance of the Germans had activated a large search. Her phone was eliminated, which increased concern because she had previously regularly contacted her family in North Rhine-Westfalen. Wilga’s mother had called on social media to look for her daughter.
When she was finally found, Carolina Wilga was dehydrated, exhausted and hungry. However, according to the authorities, she got away relatively light – with a foot injury, cuts, countless insect bites, bruises and a sunburn.
