Giraffe cub “Amari” turns six months old on July 23 and has developed beautifully over the past six months. “Meanwhile, ‘Amari’ measures over two meters and is brimming with energy. With her long, blue tongue she likes to pick fresh leaves along with the rest of the group, but we continue to feed them Holstein cow’s milk,” said Eveline Dungl, head of the zoological department.
Thanks to special branch holders, the giraffes can be fed at head height. The giraffes not only taste the leaves, but also the bark. “Some branches are also secured in receptacles on the floor of the facility, as the animals like to scratch their bodies and paws with the thin, soft twigs,” Dungl says.
“Traditionally, we get a large part of the branches and leaves that our giraffes eat from the forestry and agricultural company of the city of Vienna. Once or twice a week, branches of deciduous trees such as poplar, field maple, ash, hornbeam and copper beech and robinia are brought to the zoo from the forest management of the Wienerwald and Lobau. Robinia are especially popular with our giraffes,” says zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck.
