Vets free polar bear from a can

Date:

In Russian Antarctica, a female polar bear has been freed from a can of food after her tongue was trapped in a can of condensed milk for three days. A team of vets from the Moscow Zoo flew to Siberia for the rescue.

“Created. Saved. They removed the can from the mouth of the polar bear,” wrote Svetlana Radionova, head of the Russian environmental protection agency Rosprirodnadzor, delighted on her Telegram channel. The young bear had apparently come across the can that people had left behind while searching for food.

At first, residents of the Dikson settlement on the shore of the icy Kara Sea wanted to help, but it was in vain. Therefore, veterinarians from the Moscow Zoo flew in, who eventually drugged the animal and removed the can.

They then transported the animal from 80 to 90 kilograms to a safe distance from civilization, where they also left a stock of fish. So she has something to eat after waking up, the environmental protection agency said.

Since the 1990s, many housing projects in Russian Antarctica have been abandoned due to economic difficulties, but the waste has been left behind. “That’s why wild animals now live near hazardous waste left behind by humans,” Radionova suspected.
