Rain, storm, hail – search for predecessor, trembling for further storms

Date:

On Friday evening, the residents of the Tyrolean Stubai Valley had to discover what a storm can do. The missing pastor (60) has disappeared without a trace, searches were started again on Monday afternoon. The clean-up work is still in progress. In the valley and in other parts of Tyrol people are now trembling for new storms. Today, Monday, there could be a bang here and there. Storm and hail are also possible.

According to the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics, thunderstorms could develop again from mid-afternoon – mainly in the area of the main Alpine ridge. These are expected to spread by evening, especially from the main ridge towards the Upper and Middle Inn Valley and across East Tyrol. “Sometimes the thunderstorms can be severe: heavy rain, storms and sometimes hail are possible,” it said.

“Risk of damage increased south of the inn”
The risk of damage is especially high in the “already affected areas” south of the Inn. “After a short period of calm, a cold front will follow overnight across Tyrol, initially accompanied by intermittent thunderstorms. Calm is expected during Tuesday, although there may still be occasional showers.” the experts continue.

Not least because of Friday’s devastating storm in the Stubai Valley, Elmar Rizzoli, Head of the Crisis and Hazard Management Department of the State of Tyrol, appeals to the population: “Given the currently forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms, It is essential to exercise caution and avoid, for example, car trips or walks that are not absolutely necessary or to stay away from endangered areas such as running water, especially those that were already hard hit over the weekend.”

Search for missing pastor continues
The search for the missing Reverend Augustin continued on Monday afternoon, police spokesman Stefan Eder told the “Krone”. A search had to be called off over the weekend to no avail. The 60-year-old was probably hit by a debris flow on Friday evening while driving his car.

A Bible, business cards and documents – these personal belongings of the pastor were discovered on Saturday by water rescue services on the banks of the Ruetz. Parts of his car were also recovered from the torrential water – torn into several pieces and barely recognizable as a car.
