Five electric scooters caught fire in front of the beach of Klagenfurt on Sunday. Explosions were even heard. The fire service warns of the dangers of “sensitive devices”.
There was said to have been a loud bang when an electric scooter suddenly caught fire at a car rental agency outside the Klagenfurt lido on Sunday evening. Although a witness tried to contain the flames with a portable fire extinguisher, they quickly spread to four other e-scooters.
A water bath is required for prolonged extinguishing
“The batteries of electrical appliances can be extinguished with water in the short term, but in the long term you need a water bath in which the batteries have to be cooled for 24 hours,” explains Wolfgang Germ of the Klagenfurt fire brigade, who was deployed to the fire service. lido, and adds . “Otherwise, because the batteries are connected, they would always catch fire, which could lead to an explosion.”
The police suspect a technical defect as the reason for the fire: “A third-party error is excluded. The total damage amounts to several thousand euros.”
In general, fires in e-scooters are always a problem, according to the emergency services. “If rechargeable batteries are damaged by mechanical influences, such as a knock or an accident, you have to be careful because the devices are very sensitive. The heat makes it even better,” Germ says.
