Jörg Kachelmann is an eloquent meteorologist and moderator who never avoids a dispute. This time with authorities and politicians in Carinthia, when he says in response to the weather disaster in Geländetal: “On June 29 at 2 a.m. it was clear day and night what was going on.” ?
According to Kachelmann, the corresponding warning for Arriach and Treffen appeared on his homepage at 2 am. As proof, he sent the “Krone” the image (see below). In fact, “extreme flood risk” is reported for the lower valley. The civil defense alarm did not go off until 5:30 a.m.
Not providing help?
That, of course, raises questions, and one of them was asked by Civil Defense Councilor Daniel Fellner: “It’s unbelievable. Kachelmann stands up and claims to have known everything hours before. Why didn’t he warn us? Why did he alarm and warning center not called?”
That would have been three precious hours, according to Fellner, “to get your belongings and life to safety.” The provincial government now wants to have the facts investigated, including legally. “It can also be about not providing help.”
Kachelmann counters: “We don’t see ourselves as above the authorities.”
