French President Emmanuel Macron has accused Russia of being a colonial power in the war in Ukraine. “Russia is one of the last colonial powers,” he said during a visit to Benin in West Africa. This was demonstrated when Russia decided to “invade a neighboring country to defend its own interests,” he said.
“This is a war from the early 20th or 19th century,” Macron said, referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which no one in Europe expected.
“And I say that in a continent that has suffered from colonial infighting,” he said, referring to the colonial past of many African countries.
Macron arrived in Cameroon on Monday, where he met President Paul Biya, who has been in power for 40 years. After Benin he wants to visit Guinea-Bissau. The Africa Tour also marks France’s newfound partnership with the African continent, where former colonial power France is concerned about the growing influence of Russia and China.
