According to a media report, Russian hackers attacked the German electricity grid with a spy campaign. A suspected perpetrator has been identified. An arrest warrant has been issued for the man. In the summer of 2017, he allegedly hacked into the network of the company Netcom BW, which is owned by the energy company EnBW.
This allowed access to internet traffic, the Bayerischer Rundfunk and the Westdeutscher Rundfunk reported on Thursday. The control of the electricity and gas network was not affected.
According to the US Department of Justice, the man is said to be part of a hacker group that works for the Russian secret service FSB. These also target other energy companies.
Authorities monitored internet traffic
It is unclear how many corporate networks the group has penetrated. However, the authorities managed to at least partially monitor the hackers’ internet traffic, as one of the servers used is located in Germany.
The hackers are also said to have hacked and redesigned strategically important websites to gain access to confidential information such as login credentials. Among other things, it affects a company that develops websites for energy suppliers.
