The excitement was high last Saturday in Natternbach, Upper Austria, when an entire scorpion family – mother and 17 cubs – crawled out of their trunks after a holiday in Croatia. Tierhilfe Gusental brought the unwanted holiday souvenir to the animal shelter in Linz. They were looking for someone who would go to Croatia in the near future and take the small animals with them.
“A friend of mine works at the animal shelter in Linz and asked if we wanted to do it. We are a very animal-loving family, so we didn’t think much about it,” says Sabine Wolfsegger, who drove to the island of Krk with daughter Marie and father Erwin on Thursday. “Mother and young animals were professionally packed in a transport box. We also had a letter from the animal shelter with us in case we were checked at the border,” says Wolfsegger.
There were no problems with transport and after arrival the family started looking for a suitable home for the scorpions. They were released on a southern slope and immediately entrenched.
