There are many energy saving tips. Together with the environmental consultancy in Vienna, we calculated what they really yield.
High inflation and energy prices are eating up the financial reserves of the Viennese population. And the next price hikes are just around the corner. Even top politicians can’t think of anything better than giving energy-saving tips.
But what do they really do? The “Krone” calculated together with Ewald Gärber, energy expert at the Vienna environmental consultancy:
- Showering offers the greatest savings potential, especially if the water is heated by an electric boiler. The costs for the saved cold water (water and sewer charges) are not even included.
- Cooling also has a completely different effect. Mobile air conditioners use the most electricity, split units about half. A fan is the cheapest – running for eight hours for 60 days.
- A kettle uses less energy than heating water on the stove. Gas is the most expensive.
- If you measure three degrees in the middle compartment of the fridge-freezer combination, you set the temperature higher. Four degrees more saves 76 kWh or 30 percent in electricity costs (assumption: electricity consumption of the cooling unit 254 kWh/a).
- If a tumble dryer is used, it will consume 176 kWh per year for 160 cycles. Therefore, use a clothesline in the summer.
For the calculations we have assumed a natural gas price of € 0.15/kWh and an electricity price of € 0.38/kWh.
