China calls Pelosi visit to Taiwan ‘complete farce’

Russia defends that Pelosi’s visit “reflects the same line” by Washington regarding the “situation” in Ukraine. The EU, for its part, has insisted on the need to “avoid miscalculations” and has emphasized its commitment to the “one China” policy.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday condemned the visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives.

Wang has described the visit as: “complete farce”and warned that “Those who play with fire will not end well, and those who insult China must be punished.”

The Chinese minister has accused the US of “violating China’s sovereignty under the guise of democracy”, and has stated that even if Taiwan relies on Washington’s power, “this will not change the international consensus that there is only one China in the world”.

The Chinese foreign minister is set to meet with the U.S. secretary of state in the Cambodian capital this Wednesday at the meeting of foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners, but both are expected to no reciprocal date.

Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, will also attend the meeting, who argued that Pelosi’s visit “reflects the same line” on the part of Washington regarding the situation in Ukraine, stressing that the United States “has a desire to show everyone its impunity”.

The European Union, for its part, has not commented on the visit to Taiwan, but has insisted on the “need to reduce tensions through dialogue and avoid calculation errorsin the Taiwan Strait.

The EU has emphasized its importance in “maintaining the peace and the status quo”, and said that member states “remain committed to the ‘one China’ policy”.
