Four people were fatally injured when lightning struck Lafayette Park in front of the White House in Washington on Thursday. Part of the park was closed for several hours due to the incident.
The lightning would have struck directly in front of the building complex of the American government headquarters. On Thursday, a heavy thunderstorm swept across Washington. The four seriously injured have been taken to nearby hospitals, the fire service said. The victims were two men and two women, a fire spokesman said.
According to CNN, the four people were said to have sought shelter under a tree during the storm when lightning struck.
22-year-old college student killed by lightning in Wyoming
A similar incident was fatal in the US state of Wyoming. A student was struck by lightning in Bridger-Teton National Forest – the 22-year-old died of cardiac arrest. The victim had led students through the forest as part of a wilderness excursion.
