Friday is the hottest day of the year so far. At 3:45 p.m. 38.7 degrees were measured at the ZAMG weather station in Seibersdorf – and it can get a little warmer. It overshadowed the previous peak of 37.8 degrees in 2022, also recorded in Seibersdorf on July 23.
At 3:45 pm it was already at least 37 degrees at seven weather stations: Seibersdorf, Wolkersdorf, Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, Pottschach (all in Lower Austria), as well as in Mattersburg (Burgenland), Vienna Donaufeld and St. Andrä/Lavantal (Carinthia). Temperatures should rise slightly until about 5 p.m.
Cold front is approaching
At the same time, a cold front approached from the west. Severe thunderstorms are possible in the western half of Austria in the afternoon and Saturday evening, according to ZAMG. There can also be storms with heavy rainfall and thus mudslides and small scale flooding.
On Saturday, showers are possible everywhere and in the south of Austria there are also some strong thunderstorms, regional storms are also possible here, reports the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).
