Cause unclear – 13 dead in Thai nightclub fire

Date:

At least 13 people died in a fire at a nightclub in Thailand on Friday evening. About 40 others were injured, some seriously, police said. The interior of the restaurant was completely destroyed. The cause of the fire was initially unclear.

The fire broke out around 1 a.m. at the Mountain B club in Chonburi province, southeast of the capital Bangkok. Videos on social networks show visitors trying to escape the inferno of flames through a single open door. People scream as the whole building is on fire in the background. The interior of the restaurant was completely destroyed, as can be seen in photos taken after the extinguishing work.

Guests caught in restaurant
The fire killed nine men and four women and injured about 40 others, eight of them seriously. It should only be about Thai men and women. According to Khaosod newspaper, many guests were trapped in the restaurant when the fire broke out because the rear exit was locked. In addition, the inside of the nightclub would be lined with easily combustible foam panels to isolate sound. It was unclear Friday morning what caused the fire. The bar had only been open for a month and was especially popular with young people from the area.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha assured the families of the victims that they would receive help from the authorities. He also called on the organizers to create appropriate emergency exits and safety measures.
