“Efforts to attack Mariupol do not cease. The city’s defenders held out heroically for more than 40 days, holding back the overwhelming forces of the Russian invaders,” a Ukrainian high command said.
The Russian army announced its final offensive on Tuesday to take the port city after the deadline for Ukrainian troops to lay down their weapons and leave the city for Kiev-controlled territory.
For his part, an adviser to the Ukrainian president has stated that Russian troops have left the city of Mykolaiv and plan to surrender in Kherson, both coastal towns near Crimea. He has warned that the Russian army will not leave Kherson immediately, but that they are already preparing for a “surrender”.

The head of Lviv’s regional military administration on Tuesday evening confirmed new airstrikes and explosions in Ukraine’s Lviv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, as confirmed by the Ukrainian press.
He has also warned residents to stay in shelters before the air raid sirens go off.
