A year has passed since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan. On August 14, 2021, they entered Kabul, the capital, and then President Ahsraf Ghani fled the country. Many Afghans tried to leave the country, but few succeeded.

After a year, Taliban law prevails in Afghanistan, women’s rights are practically lacking, and misery and poverty are the protagonists of the daily reality of the people. Recently arriving in Kabul, EITB Media journalist Mikel Ayestarán took a picture of the situation in a statement to Euskadi Irratia.

“It is a miserable country, where has the hunger arrived. People have lost hope, there is no work, unemployment has skyrocketed, there is no money and young people want to leave the country, yes or yes,” explains the correspondent.

Nilofar Bayat has been among those who have managed to flee since the Taliban returned to Kabul. She is a lawyer and activist for women’s rights. Today he lives in Euskadi.

Interviewed in Euskadi Irratia, Bayat said that in Afghanistan there is a lot of poverty and there is hardly enough to eat, “there are a lot of people begging on the street. They ask for help, but no one offers it”. According to international organizations, eight out of ten Afghan men and women living in extreme poverty. In the case of women, the situation is even more serious. “There is a gender apartheid going on, they want to destroy half of society – the Taliban. Because we are women, they don’t want us to exist,” Bayat said.

However, Afghan women did not give up their fight and have shown that they want this protest in Kabul. “There is hope,” said EITB Media journalist Mikel Ayestarán, “the work these women are doing is incredible, with their activism from day one.”
