The son of author Salman Rushdie, who was seriously injured in an attack on Friday, has confirmed that his father is doing better. “Despite his serious and life-changing injuries, his usual combative and defiant sense of humor remains intact,” Zafar Rushdie wrote in a statement on Twitter on Sunday.
“We are very relieved that he was taken off the ventilator and supplemental oxygen yesterday and was able to say a few words,” the statement said.
Condition “still critical”
His father’s condition remains critical and he is undergoing extensive medical treatment. A spokesman for Salman Rushdie confirmed the authenticity of Zafar Rushdie’s Twitter account to the German news agency dpa.
Salman Rushdie was assaulted Friday by a man at an event in western New York’s Chautauqua, and has since been treated at a hospital in neighboring Pennsylvania.
Alleged attacker is in jail
The 75-year-old has been persecuted by religious fanatics for decades, but police have not yet confirmed a motive. The alleged attacker, a 24-year-old man, is in custody.
Ayatollah Khomeini, then the leader of the Iranian Revolution, called for the death of Rushdie’s 1988 work, The Satanic Verses. He accused him of insulting Islam, the Prophet and the Quran.
