“Unacceptable” – uniform not buttoned: punishment cell for Navalny

Date:

Imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny said he spent three days in a punishment cell for minor violations of prison rules. He tweeted Monday through his lawyers that he had been fined for regularly failing to button the top button of his prison uniform. He also tried to persuade fellow inmates to form a trade union.

“The isolation cell is a concrete kennel measuring 2.5 x 3 metres. It is usually unbearable there because it is cold and humid. There is water on the floor,” wrote President Vladimir Putin’s opponent, adding ironically: “I have the beach version – it is very hot there and there is almost no air.”

“At night you lie there and you feel like a fish in water”
The window is small, there is no ventilation. “At night you lie there and you feel like a fish in water. At 5 o’clock in the morning they remove your mattress and pillow (…) and lift your bunk bed. At 9 pm the bunk bed becomes again and the mattress is brought back. There is an iron table, an iron bench, a sink, a hole in the floor and two cameras on the ceiling.”

Navalny is reportedly serving his sentence for probation violations, fraud and contempt of court at the IK-6 penal colony in Melekhovo, about 250 km east of Moscow. Authorities in Russia describe Navalny and his comrades-in-arms as enemies of the state who wanted to destabilize Russia with the support of the West.

Arrested in January 2021
The Kremlin critic was arrested in January 2021 when he returned from Germany and convicted of violating probationary terms. He collapsed on a domestic flight from Russia in August 2020. First he was treated in Russia, then transferred to the Berlin Charité. There, poisoning with a nerve agent was found. The Moscow government has denied allegations that Russian authorities attempted to assassinate Putin’s opponent.
