A horrific accident happened early in the afternoon on Monday in the Vienna Seestadt. Because she braked too hard, a Viennese woman hit the brake lever of her bicycle in her thigh. Fire and rescue had to unpack heavy equipment.
It would become a normal bike ride on Ascension Day, as the Viennese so often did. But it must end in unspeakable pain and emergency surgery. On Monday, shortly after 1 p.m., the 64-year-old was standing on Seestadtstrasse in the district of the same name in Donaustadt when she – at least that is what the emergency services suspect – braked way too hard. No one knows for sure, but apparently no other people should have been involved in the accident.
Rescue and fire brigade rushed to the scene of the accident
The sporty lady fell over her handlebars so unhappily that she slammed the right brake lever deep into her thigh. Screaming in pain, the cyclist immediately caught the attention of passers-by. The ambulance was called and because of the precarious situation, the Viennese professional fire brigade was sent to Seestadtstrasse.

The Florianis unpacked heavy equipment: first the steering wheel was disassembled in a laborious process, then the brake lever was removed from the rest of the steering wheel with a grinding machine, according to firefighters spokesman Gerald Schimpf. Ambulance staff provided the seriously injured 64-year-old with strong painkillers. The victim was then taken to hospital with the brake lever in his leg. According to the rescue service, there was no life-threatening situation.
