Day 2 in the money laundering trial against Alfons Mensdorff-Pouilly: It was about his and other people’s accounts, less about Eurofighter’s interceptors than about hunting parties, where “Count Ali” fought for every penny…
Two million in an account, which the Ministry of Economy and Corruption WKStA attributes to the accused nobleman, was booked under the title “compensation”. “Graf Ali” not only denies the money laundering allegation, but is also the owner of the account. This would have belonged to the late investor Tim Landon, it was his money. What he does not deny is 300,000 euros in repayment of the loan to him, where the rest is inexplicable to him.
“Cholic” and a little stingy?
A witness on the second day of the trial, a former employee, shed some light on the case. He “continued to receive money from the bank, 100,000, 200,000 or 300,000 euros”. He usually handed the money over to Mensdorff, whom he called ‘choleric’. And a little stingy: “He used to check every penny of the hunting accounts of companies in Scotland from all places.”
Mensdorff acknowledges this with a laugh, but then gets serious: he did not know the recipients of the sums of money, it was – he emphasizes again and again – Landon’s company, based on the “Isle of Nowhere”: “I have been checked so many times and nothing I have my bills in order and have always paid tax in Austria properly.”
To be prosecuted in September with more witnesses.
