“Catching Up Effects” – Pandemic and Energy: Winter Holidays Significantly More Expensive

Date:

The local tourist industry will pass on part of the higher costs to the guests, says State Secretary for Tourism Susanne Kraus-Winkler (ÖVP). After two years of pandemic and in view of rising energy prices, there are “catching up” effects in prices for the winter holidays. “You also have to understand that in the two years of the pandemic there have been almost no price increases,” she said on Friday.

Kraus-Winkler left open to what extent prices will actually rise. In an interview, she had previously talked about hotel price increases of 20 percent. For ski lifts, prices could increase by nine to ten percent compared to the previous year.

Depending on the budget “huge range of possibilities”
The Secretary of State spoke on Friday about the “huge range of holiday options – from farm holidays to five-star hotels”. Everyone can find a type of holiday that suits them, depending on their budget.

No drop in demand yet
However, the increased prices have not yet had an effect on demand. In winter tourism, bookings have “started pretty well” so far, and pre-booking tickets for the cable cars is sometimes stronger than usual. “The desire to take part in winter sports and winter holidays is definitely there,” says Kraus-Winkler.

It is not yet clear how domestic tourism deals with the necessary savings measures in winter. The supply situation in Europe is currently “very dynamic”. “We will have to watch from month to month how the situation develops and whether there is actually a shortage.”
