Economy breathes a sigh of relief: – Significantly more students than a year ago

Date:

There are currently significantly more students than a year ago. At the end of March, the number of first-year employees rose sharply by 7.8 percent to 29,679, according to a list from the Chamber of Commerce. Including the 3,726 new interns in intercompany education (minus 15.3 percent), the total increase was 4.6 percent. Tourism and the leisure industry grew the most with an increase of 32.1 percent.

The number of apprentice trainees also rose sharply in the information and consultancy sector (up 21.7 percent), in the field of transport and traffic (up 13.3 percent), in trade (up 7 percent) and in trade and crafts (plus 6.8 percent).

The Chamber of Commerce states that the total number of students over all training years still reflects the effects of the corona lockdowns in some hard-hit sectors. All in all, the number of pupils in Austria remained stable at 94,357 (previous year: 94,219) (+0.1 percent). Including all 7,033 interns in in-company training, whose numbers fell by 10 percent within a year, there were 101,390 students at the end of March – 645 people or 0.6 percent less than on the same date last year.

Fewer students at banks and insurance companies
Tourism and the leisure industry are currently training 8.6 percent fewer students across all years of education than a year ago. It is 7 percent less for banks and insurers and 2.3 percent less for industry. In contrast, there are noticeably more people in apprenticeships in the information and consultancy sector (plus 5.6 percent). The crafts sector posted a slight growth (plus 1 percent). The number of apprentices in trade is almost the same (plus 0.3 percent).

Apprenticeship training is clearly leaving the effects of the pandemic behind, it is clearly on the rise, as the large increase in the number of apprenticeships of 7.8 percent and the increase in the overall number of 0.1 percent proves. Deputy Secretary General of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ), Mariana Kühnel. However, it still proves difficult to recruit students. “Growth could be significantly higher if companies could find enough suitable apprentices. There are currently more than 15,000 more open training places registered with the AMS than are currently looking for an apprenticeship.”
