Spain exported three times as much energy to France in 2022 because of the Iberian exception

Date:

Energy imports also increased by 27%, but it is the first time that Spain sells more than it buys from its neighbor thanks to the Iberian cap measure that has made gas cheaper

In recent months, there have been talks between Spain and France to see who bought the most energy from the other country. But figures released on Thursday by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce put an end to the controversy: for the first time, Spain sold more energy to France than it bought. In addition, the amount of energy it sold to the neighboring country in 2022 was three times higher than in 2021, reaching 3,313 million euros.

Energy was imported from France for 2,127 million euros, 27% more than in 2021, but the fact is that turnover was 300% higher. Historically, Spain had always been a net importer with France in energy, but last year the tables turned. This was explained during a meeting with the media by the Secretary of State for Trade, Xiana Méndez, where she also pointed out that by 2022 Spain will have exported twice as much energy to Portugal and ten times more to Morocco, to give other examples.

In total, Spain exported energy products worth €38,362 million last year, according to the ministry’s annual data, 9.8% of total sales abroad and 80% more than what it exported in 2021. the increase in electricity sales by 158% to 7,089 million euros, followed by gas (97% more than in 2021) to 2,124 million, and 67% more oil and derivatives to 29,050 million euros.
