Series production for Volta Trucks is now starting in the former MAN factory. The Swedish electric truck brand has invested tens of millions of euros in this. In Upper Austria, the founders’ trust currently provides around 400 jobs.
The yellow warning vests have a “V” on the back, which could also be a superhero symbol. The toecaps must also be pulled over the shoes before a bus in the Steyr Automotive design stops in front of the Administration Building to go to Halls 9, 22 and 25 on the factory grounds, where Volta Trucks is ramping up production of electric trucks with the Upper Austrians.
Just days after Sigi Wolf and his WSA GmbH took over the former MAN factory, Steyr Automotive announced in September 2021 that it had won the trust of the Swedish founders.
45 prototypes and a year and a half later, series production really gets going. “It is very exciting,” says Essa Al-Saleh, general manager of Volta Trucks, as she leads a delegation through production with Austrian Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler.
35 to 40 million euros invested in Steyr
The Swedes have already raised more than 360 million euros in investor funds. According to Al-Saleh, between 35 and 40 million euros have been invested in machinery and production equipment at the Steyr site.
This year, 1,300 Volta Zero models will leave the factory in Upper Austria, 4,500 vehicles are planned for next year and 14,000 in 2027.
“Collaboration is exceptional”
In the start-up phase, about 400 Steyr employees are busy building the fully electric vehicles. “The collaboration is exceptional,” says Al-Saleh enthusiastically.
