According to a study, there is a large gap between ambition and reality at German companies when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI). According to a survey by the digital association Bitkom, about three-quarters of respondents attach great importance to this technology for the future competitiveness of the German economy. However, only 15 percent of them are already using AI.
This pace will hardly change in the short term: a quarter of companies that have not yet used AI can envision using such programs in 20 years at the earliest. Another 29 percent cite a period of ten to twenty years.
Almost half of companies believe that deploying AI early can gain a competitive advantage. At the same time, almost a third feared more risks than opportunities for their own company.
Hope for more registrations
The newly elected Bitkom chairman Ralf Wintergerst is counting on a change of heart. “As more AI applications come to market, more companies should take advantage, and I hope they will.”
Bitkom’s research also reveals discrepancies in other areas. 92 percent of those surveyed find the analysis of large and detailed amounts of data (“big data”) very important. But only about 40 percent take advantage of this opportunity.
The relationship is similar when it comes to online communication between devices (“Internet of Things, IoT”). The values here are 84 and 36 percent respectively. 82 percent of companies thought the 5G standard for mobile communication was very important, but only 23 percent used this technology.
