Online retailer Amazon is also becoming increasingly important when it comes to parcel delivery. As the regulator RTR announced today, the US group has now overtaken delivery company DPD in terms of shipping volumes, pushing it to third place. The undisputed topper with a market share of 52 percent is the partly state-owned Austrian Post, but that had to give up. Amazon gained 16 percent in the first quarter (more recent figures are not available).
In terms of turnover, DPD is still second in the domestic parcel delivery segment with a share of 12.2 percent, behind Austrian Post (60.6 percent) and ahead of Amazon (10.8 percent).
The package tree continues
In Austria, 83.8 million parcels were delivered in the first quarter of 2023, which is 6.8 million parcels or almost 9 percent more than in the first quarter of 2022, RTR calculates. In the first quarter, about 7.7 million parcels were transported abroad by Austrian postal companies.
In Austria, too, 141.3 million letters were delivered in the first three months of this year, 4 percent less than in the same quarter of the previous year. 8.0 million letters were sent abroad, 300,000 letters or 3.3 percent less than at the beginning of 2022.
