They discover a Roman tower and a Roman wall in Albacete

Date:

They were found at the archaeological site of Libisosa, where only 10 percent of the surface has been excavated.

During this summer’s excavation campaign, a Roman tower and wall dating back to the 1st century BC was found in the Libisosa Archaeological Park, located in the town of Lezuza (Albacete). The tower discovered corresponds to one of the gates, the one on the east side of the settlement that the Romans built after the destruction of the native city of Oretano.

The excavations, in which specialists from the universities of Murcia and Alicante took part, have revealed part of the fortress that the Roman army hastily erected during the wars of Sertorius. The open tower stands with a perfect quadrangular belt filled with masonry. Among the associated archaeological materials has been found a bone “stilus”, a punch used by the Romans to write on the tablets, dating back to the Republican era. The punch retains the tip and is missing only the spatula or button head on the other side, which served as an eraser.

According to these researchers, the intervention will have to be completed with the consolidation and improvement of the tower and the found part of the wall and will be excavated in the short and medium term in the area where another tower – the northern one of the fortress.

At this site, where only 10 percent of the surface has been excavated so far, there are actually several “Libiosas” superimposed: the Bronze Age, the Oretana, the Roman and the Late Middle Ages. Located on a high promontory, it has been a crossroads since prehistoric times due to its strategic location and for its abundant water, agricultural and hunting resources and the nearby salt flats. The Romans arrived in this prosperous city of Oreta in the year 180 BC, attracted by the river Lezuza, which surrounds it, and because of its strategic value, as it was a passage from the Meseta to Andalusia and from Levante to Extremadura and Portugal , a crossroads vital for Rome to undertake the conquest of the south of the peninsula.

During the Sertorian Wars (82 to 72 BC), in which in Hispania the parties susceptible to the proconsuls Sertorio and Metelo collided, the city of Libisosa from Oreta was destroyed and the Romans built a colony there. being dug up little by little. Ritual vessels, amphorae, ceramics, weapons, bronze bowls, and coins are some of the objects found so far, along with construction structures such as the tower and wall found this summer.
