The American Melody Gardot (New Jersey, 1985) is jazz, without being it, but still being it. This is how the French newspaper ‘Le Monde’ accidentally described the artist. And it’s that the beginning of her career was motivated by her doctor, who was concerned about the consequences of the head trauma she suffered when she was hit by a car at the age of 19 while cycling. Gardot accelerated his recovery by composing his first songs while he was still in bed. From there came the EP ‘Some Lessons-The Bedroom Sessions’.
Since then, the singer-songwriter’s voice has already traveled halfway around the world, conveying emotion without the need to force registers, as can be heard on ‘Little Something’, a song recorded in 2020 with Sting. Now, after her 2015 performance, Gardot returns to La Mar de Músicas with a new vocal and piano album (‘Entre eux Deux’), recorded with Franco-Brazilian Philippe Powell, son of the late Brazilian legend Baden Powell de Aquino. Both piano virtuosos will take the stage at the Paco Martín Auditorium in Torres Park along with Cristopher Thomas on bass and Jorge Bezzeria on percussion. This synergy is presented as a completely new and incomparable sound to his previous works, reaffirming Gardot as one of the great divas of jazz. His new songs are an ode to the love for French culture and its adoptive city of Paris.
Cimafunk is one of the current singers in his country. A true Afro-Cuban rock star. The name refers to its origin, the Maroons, Cubans of African descent who escaped slavery by living freely in the forests. This spirit permeates his music, which aims to subvert conventional sounds with rhythmic innovation. A renewed funk style, full of soul and enormously danceable, which redefines contemporary Cuban music. And it goes beyond the sound spectrum, elevating Afro-Latin identity and the fusion of black cultures.
Cimafunk unleashes Saturday night fever at the Arab Castle on July 16, and presents the tour of their latest album, ‘Elalimento’. Names like the godfather of funk Georges Clinton, American hip-hop stars Lupe Fiasco and Cee Lo Green, Jamaican dancehall singer Stylo G or the legendary Chucho Valdés join this 13-track album.
