Silence in Sex Life: Pleasure Diluting Contraceptives?

Date:

Sociologist and sexologist Barbara Rothmüller this time about the loss of desire through contraceptives.

It is considered the number one pleasure killer among men: contraception with a condom. Although they not only protect against pregnancy, but also against disease, many people do not like condoms as a method of contraception. However, the most common alternative, the Pill, can reduce women’s desire. For example with Lea: “I had a huge loss of libido due to the pill and also had problems cumming during sex, which was otherwise not the case. Sometimes I almost had to force myself to have sex.” After she stopped taking the pill, after a while her desire was “back, like snapping the fingers,” says Lea with relief.

It’s a dilemma. Women take the pill because it offers a high level of protection against unwanted pregnancy. At the same time, young women are increasingly concerned about whether the Pill is harmful to their health. The most recent study on youth sexuality in Germany confirms the change in values: since 2014, the use of the pill among young people has fallen sharply. However, only one in five see the fact that the pill reduces sexual desire as a problem.

Not all women feel a loss of libido due to the hormone change. Sexual desire is actually influenced by several factors. The pill certainly has one advantage: it practically eliminates itself. Because if you no longer feel like having sex, you no longer need to use contraception.

Jokes aside, if women really do notice a loss of desire from the Pill, there are only a few alternatives. Changing the pill formulation rarely brings significant improvement. That leaves the spiral or the use of condoms anyway. It takes regular practice for unenthusiastic condom users to see if they can get used to the (side-effect-free) latex alternative. For example, sex counseling recommends that men sometimes also use condoms to masturbate, to get used to their use and feeling during sexual activity. The effort would certainly pay off. After all, everyone involved benefits from pleasurable sexuality.
