Visit to Taiwan: the US must hold back

Date:

The visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan is not without controversy. It’s hard to explain why she has no need to stab another international wasp nest. Certainly in times like these, no one needs further escalation.

The saber clatter over the US high-level visit to Taiwan grew louder on Tuesday. China’s Foreign Ministry warns of “playing with fire” and has flown 21 fighter jets over the Taiwan Strait. That doesn’t evoke good feelings. The world has seen enough of this muscle laxity in Russia in recent months. And we all know where that can lead.

Nancy Pelosi has opened the door to escalation
This leads to a historical smoldering conflict. The communist leadership in Beijing views free Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic, while the island nation has long considered itself independent. The war in Ukraine has fueled fears that China could now also carry out plans similar to Russia’s and carry out its “unification”. Since the US mainly supports Taiwan with arms supplies, any spiral of escalation is dangerous. And now Nancy Pelosi has pushed that door open.

Even Biden is not convinced by the visit
Even in the US, not everyone is convinced of this trip. President Joe Biden also says the visit is “not a good idea at this time” as government officials warn of a possible military escalation. Apparently the visit is a No. 3 solo effort in the state. A single decision that could once again jeopardize all diplomacy – that leaves an uneasy growl in the stomach.

We should have learned that!
Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to say no to every injustice without a word, or that you can’t afford to have your own opinion just to protect the feelings of Beijing’s leadership. Attitude and criticism are good and important. Nevertheless, as long as it is still possible without weapons, this must continue to be discussed. Risking the last vestiges of a diplomatic relationship for no reason has never resolved a conflict. We should have learned that!

No one needs another war
Special sensitivity is now required instead. It requires highly experienced diplomacy and a cautious approach. The US better hold back. No one needs a military conflict right now.
