According to the mayor of Bilbao, these amounts “bear beyond any doubt the social profitability” of the art gallery on its 25th anniversary.

The Mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburtohas reported that in pre-pandemic times, the contribution of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao gross domestic product (GDP) amounted to more than 500 million euros, while it involved an investment of about 130 million. “There is no doubt about the social profitability of the museum,” he underlined.
Interviewed on Radio Euskadi’s “Boulevard” programme, the Bilbao councilor was questioned about the art gallery’s 25th anniversary, which, according to Aburto, has made Bilbao “known and recognized”. Mayor Jeltzale has appreciated the “very difficult decision” which Basque institutions took over two decades ago at a “very convulsive” moment, with an unemployment rate of 27%, a “terrible social crisis” and with most cultural movements against it. “I will never be grateful enough for that decision,” he added.
Aburto described the plan to expand the market as a “very good idea” Guggenheim to Urdabai and has emphasized that culture “is an investment, it’s what makes us more attractive, and it’s also very cross-cutting”.
With regard to the projects of the station of the TAV in Abando and the bury the train in Zorroza, the mayor has acknowledged that they are more delayed than expected — both are waiting for the informational study — but he has insisted that “he will not stop as long as he is mayor until progress is made”, and that he hopes that “the same commitment on the other side” (referring to the Spanish government).
In a different order, Aburto pointed out that the decision on a eventual ban on the entry of polluting vehicles to Bilbao should be done “with calm and prudence, talking to the neighbors so that it does not cause inconvenience while respecting the rules and respecting energy efficiency”, since, as he emphasized, this policy “has come to stay”.
Finally, when asked about the exhibition this Saturday from a pro-russian flag at the San Mamés stadium and the subsequent eviction of the fan in question, Aburto has ruled that it was a “totally provocative” act and that it does not seem appropriate “when Europe is bleeding”. Faced with this attitude, he has appreciated the “integrating layer” of the Athletic Club fans.
