After a sharp drop of more than 10,000 people last week, unemployment figures are only slightly down this week. According to Labor Minister Martin Kocher, this has to do with the war in Ukraine and strong seasonal effects around the Easter holidays. At the same time, he reports a record number of vacancies.
Currently, 323,702 people are registered with the Public Employment Service (AMS) as either unemployed (251,396) or in training (72,306). That means that the number has decreased by 757 people compared to the previous week. “Unemployment is falling again this week. After the sharp drop of more than 10,000 people last week, unemployment figures will only fall slightly this week. The fall in unemployment was slowed by the war in Ukraine. In addition, seasonal effects around the Easter holidays, which fell at a different time in the reference year, play a certain role,” said Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP). Last year Easter fell into a lockdown. There were 119,198 more unemployed than today. before the Corona pandemic in April 2019, unemployment was higher than it is today.
Short-time working is decreasing
Pre-registrations for short-time working are also declining. That’s 42,677 people this week. “The fact that this number is now significantly lower than a few weeks ago is mainly due to the fact that many short-time work applications that only ran until the end of March were not extended. However, the number could increase slightly in the coming weeks due to further working time reduction projects in the production sector,” Kocher said in a broadcast.
Vacancies mainly in trade and tourism
According to AMS, there are currently 123,897 job openings, a record. Personnel are mainly sought in trade, tourism and the manufacture of goods. The same applies to the construction sector and the care and welfare sector. According to Kocher, the intention is to fill these vacancies in order to further reduce unemployment. The high demand for labor must be met as best as possible.
