The mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Gorka Urtaran, has criticized the “impunity” with which José Barrinuevo, former interior minister of the Spanish government, defends GAL terrorism. According to him, it is not just the conviction, but you have to work ‘from the social and legal point of view’.
In the morning, Urtaran, together with the deputy of the Spanish government in the CAV, Denis Itxaso, inaugurated the Plaza de la Memoria in Vitoria-Gasteiz, a space dedicated to the victims of terrorism. The new space is located between the post office and the monument to the victims of terrorism.
On the day of Remembrance Day, the councilor of Vitoria-Gasteiz emphasized that “it cannot be that a former politician can act with such impunity and want to express his protagonist or his responsibility in the face of one of the darkest episodes , most inhumane and most violent that Spanish democracy has had”.
“It is true that there are expressions of condemnation and also very significant ones, for which we should be grateful, but it is not enough to end impunity, and this is something that we must work on from a social point of view and also from a court,” he added.
Gorka Urtaran has emphasized that Vitoria-Gasteiz is “with all the victims who have suffered human rights violations”. “Today it is especially important that we express the total need to end impunity, which is re-victimizing victims and depriving them of their right to reparation, dignity, justice and truth,” he assured.
