Young, handsome, rhetorically adept – and soon party leader? According to information from “Krone”, Lower Austria’s AMS boss Sven Hergovich will be nominated in the evening as a rival candidate to SPÖ chairman Franz Schnabl.
Franz Schnabl achieved the historically worst result of the SPÖ in Lower Austria on Sunday. Nevertheless, there was applause from Schnabl’s closest circle in the party headquarters. And Schnabl spoke to his comrades on Sunday that the election target had been achieved and only the icing on the cake (a plus for the result) was missed (see video below). So peace, joy, pancakes at the SPÖ? Not at all.
The image that emerged on the electoral party was deceptive. Schnabl’s critics were not even present and were plotting a coup outside the party building. The powerful mayor of St. Pölten, Matthias Stadler, already called for measures on Sunday evening.
Former MP Hannes Weninger from the Mödling district said of the SPÖ campaign: “‘NÖ Mix’ and ‘Rote Hanni’ are not messages that can score political points in times of social crisis.” Was also a union member clearly unhappy with Schnabl’s performance. As reported, an opponent candidate for the party presidency will be nominated during the crisis meeting on Monday evening. According to information from “Krone”, Lower Austria’s AMS boss Sven Hergovich should be the preferred candidate for Schnabl’s opponent.
The opposing candidate
Born in Korneuburg, he began his political career in the Vienna Workers’ Chamber and as an adviser in the cabinet of Doris Bures. Then it worked for Alois Stöger at the Ministry of Transport. From 2016 to 2017, he was Stöger’s labor market expert at the Ministry of Social Affairs and deputy head of the ministerial office. On November 1, 2017, Hergovich became deputy state manager of the AMS Lower Austria.
He has been Country Manager since July 1, 2018. Politically, Hergovich stands for the coexistence course of the country. He worked hand in hand and always constructively with Martin Eichtinger, the ÖVP regional councilor responsible for the labor market. Hergovich currently (still) resides in Vienna.
When does it get exciting today?
From 5 p.m., the board of the SPÖ state party will meet in the state office. According to the provisional final result (including almost all ballots), the SPÖ had fallen to 20.66 percent (most recently 23.92), which is its worst result ever (previously 21.57 percent in 2013). As a result, the Reds lost a seat in the state parliament. In the future, the Social Democrats will only have twelve representatives. In any case, the two seats in the state government can be saved, but they are no longer entitled to the state deputy.
At 8 p.m., the SPÖ Niederösterreich invites you to a press statement. Hergovich himself would not comment on the “Krone” request. The party is also holding back with official information for the time being. But the trend should be clear.
