No to internal combustion engines – Chancellor Nehammer is delaying the Greens

Date:

The ÖVP boss revealed his visions for 2030. He polarized climate policy and criticized gender. You can see an analysis of the chancellor’s rhetoric in the video above.

The location – the 35th floor of the Twin Towers with a view over all of Vienna – was supposed to symbolize vision. After 15 months in office, ÖVP chancellor Karl Nehammer invited to a highly anticipated speech in which he wanted to raise his profile as head of government. 200 guests from the ÖVP family came. Nehammer presented his version of Austria for the year 2030 for 80 minutes. He defined goals – the concepts for these should be worked out by the end of the year.

Nehammer, who is the estate manager of ex-chancellor Sebastian Kurz, wanted to address the former Kurz fans who once switched from the FPÖ to the ÖVP in the voting booth. He therefore denounced gendering: “We can now discuss correct gendering in publications for weeks, but then we lose sight of people’s real problems.”

Social benefits only after five years of residence
Real estate must also be affordable for Austrians without “inheritance or winning the lottery”. That is why another 1.2 billion euros in housing subsidies must be allocated. And of course the migration issue. A distinction must be made in the future when receiving social benefits: people living in Austria may only receive social benefits after five years of legal residence. That should apply to everyone. The question is whether this is in line with EU law. Speaking of the EU, when it comes to migration, it needs to get going and find new regulations.

From the 58th minute came perhaps the most controversial part of Nehammer’s vision for the future: climate change and environmental protection. “It’s fine to cycle to work, but there’s no reason to berate or belittle those who depend on the car.” The Chancellor also turned against the climate stickers: “This is a pointless measure.”

Nehammer’s vision is environmental protection with common sense, so to speak. “Austria is a country of motorists and a world market leader in the automotive industry.”

You shouldn’t destroy this industry with 80,000 employees. The Chancellor will therefore try to block the end of internal combustion engines in the EU. He advocates the use of synthetic fuels. An insult to the green coalition partner. Not surprising: not a single top green politician wanted to comment on Nehammer’s climate-fit concept.
