The chairman of ERC, Oriol Junqueras, claimed this Wednesday that “amnesty is a legal and necessary remedy against repression.” In this sense, the Republican leader has insisted that the agreement concluded with the PSOE and Sumar before the Congress Council includes amnesty: “it includes ending repression by all necessary legal means, and it is clear that amnesty is a way which is legal and necessary, and which is included in these necessary legal options to which the PSOE has already committed itself.
During an appearance at the headquarters of the republican formation, Junqueras explained that his priorities in studying a possible investiture of the Spanish government include: “being able to continue to defend the right to self-determination; the political negotiating table; a full amnesty for all those who have been retaliated against.”; and clear economic and social obligations that affect the vast majority of our society (health or education financing and public services, commuter trains, rodalies… )”.
The leader of ERC made this appearance in conjunction with an anniversary, since the September 20, six years ago, in 2017the Guardia Civil carried out an operation at the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Generalitat. In this sense, Junqueras recalled that “the aim was to prevent the referendum that would be held a few days later, on October 1.” In the words of the Republican representative: they could not stop the consultations thanks to the support of Catalan society.
Junqueras has emphasized that six years later, they have succeeded in suppressing the crime of sedition and reforming the crime of embezzlement. Moreover, the ERC leader has once again claimed that calling and holding a referendum “is not a crime”.
For his part, the President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragones, has declared that its commitment to decide the future of Catalonia “is intact”, while six years have passed since the registration of the Guardia Civil. In a tweet, he criticized that “the state activated repression to stop 1-O, to stop democracy.”
Aragonès added that this commitment from the independence movement endures: “We demonstrated this in front of the Ministry of Economy and we continue to do so now, for amnesty and self-determination.”
