The witness hearings in the trial of ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) for making false statements ended today in a somewhat bizarre manner. After another member of ÖBAG’s supervisory board, two Russian businessmen testified. Kurz’s defenders hope to make statements that cast doubt on Thomas Schmid’s credibility.
The two Russians are said to have had a job interview with the former board of the state holding company. They reportedly contacted Kurz’s legal representation and disclosed details of the conversation with Schmid.
“Enormous pressure” on Schmid?
In the afternoon, the two businessmen from the Austrian embassy in Moscow are connected via video. The start is scheduled for 1 p.m. – if the circuit works straight away. Schmid is said to have complained to the Russians about “enormous pressure” on him from the WKStA. Kurz’s defense hopes that the interrogation will be able to cast doubt on Schmid’s possible future role as a key witness in the ÖVP investigation case.
The first witness to speak on Wednesday is Günther Helm, former boss of discounter Hofer and later member of the supervisory board of ÖBAG. He should also talk about his appointment to this role. Kurz and his former chief of staff Bernhard Bonelli are accused by the WKStA of downplaying the role of the then Chancellor in the appointments. Kurz’s statements contradict those of Schmid, who had already been called as a witness.
Judgment possible in February
After the final witness hearings, the trial will have a longer break, with the last day expected to be February 23. The closing arguments will then take place and a ruling is also possible on this day.
