The alleged mastermind of the ‘Koldo case’ justifies that he wanted to ‘help’ with the supply of masks

Date:

Following his statement before the judge, the Public Prosecutor’s Office for the Fight against Corruption requested the revocation of Cueto’s passport, a request that was not opposed by his defense.

Businessman Juan Carlos Cueto, the alleged mastermind of the company to which the mask contracts investigated by the National Court were awarded, has assured the judge of the ‘Koldo case’ that he tried to ‘help the Spaniards with their actions and not to abuse’ the sale of sanitary equipment. As confirmed by legal sources, in his statement he referred to a report prepared in 2021 by consultancy KPMG which allegedly concluded that the sales prices of masks were “in line with the market”, adding that they “little economic profit margin“.

According to the businessman, the operation that arrested him was under investigation Koldo Garcia, who was an advisor to former minister José Luis Ábalos, his profit varied between 10% and 13% of turnover (52 million euros), because he incurred a lot of costs in the operation to get the masks from China. He also stated that the prices he gave to the administration were adjusted to the market.

After his statement before the judge, the Public Prosecution Service for Anti-Corruption has requested the revocation of Cueto’s passport, a request to which his defense has not protested and to which the popular accusations of PP and Vox have been confirmed. Since there is no opposition, the judge is expected to agree to it on Thursday. The Public Prosecution Service calculates that the investigated rewards “provided an economic advantage” for De Aldama 5.5 million euros and Cueto, “de facto owner of the company”, of 9.6 million euros.
