Two UPN affiliates submit an amendment to their articles of association and demand that the party’s name be translated into Basque

Date:

Both believe that UPN should have greater sensitivity towards the Basque Country to attract socialist and Basque votes, but they have encountered a problem along the way. ‘Unión’ translates in Basque as ‘Batasuna’, and it appears the regionalist party does not want that word in its name.

Two UPN affiliates have submitted changes to the proposed statutes to translate the regionalist party’s name into Basque.

Both believe that the party should have greater sensitivity towards the Basque Country attract socialist and Basque votes, but they encountered a problem along the way. ‘Unión’ is translated in Basque as ‘Batasuna’ and it seems the regionalist party does not want that word in its name, so they have started looking for alternatives.

A possible translation of Union of the Navarrese People (UPN) I would be Nafarroako Herriaren Batasuna (NHB). The word ‘union’ is usually translated as the European Union (Europar Batasuna), but the word ‘batasuna’ and the acronym NHB are not welcomed in the regionalist party.

Considering the situation and believing that translation from Basque can attract socialist and Basque votes, the two UPN branches have proposed different options. In that sense, so is the proposal of an Estella branch Nafar Herriaren Batzeawhich would not entail any change to the acronym: NHB.

The other branch, from Andosilla, has proposed more options, indicating that these have not yet been corrected by a Basque expert: Elkarrekin Nafarroaren Herrikora and Navarrako Herriarentzat Elkarrekin. At the moment they are just proposals, but the possibility of creating a logo to match the name is also being considered.

Neither UPN president Javier Esparza nor the candidate to lead the party, Cristina Ibarrola, would comment on the matter.
