The Greens concluded their EU election campaign in Vienna on Friday afternoon, with top candidate Lena Schilling praising their supporters’ efforts as “incomprehensibly understandable”.
Given the headwind, Schilling thanked everyone who stood behind and next to her. “I would like to say how proud I am to be part of this party and fight with you,” she said, demonstratively expressing her loyalty to the party, which is under fire: “I am a great person.”
She described the election campaign as “quite a ride”. She emphasized once again that only the Greens are credibly committed ‘to the climate and against the right’.
“It wasn’t easy”
Before Schilling, party leader Werner Kogler – in a white shirt and dark sunglasses – was the experienced whip for the Greens. “It wasn’t easy, but we didn’t enter politics to make it easy for ourselves,” he said with gallows humor, given the public doubts about the honesty and party loyalty of the 23-year-old top candidate.
“We despite the headwind”
“We are defying the headwinds,” Kogler emphasized, identifying someone completely different as his opponent, namely “natural concrete makers and climate destroyers, and the right-wing extremists.” Sunday’s elections are about an ecological, social, liberal and, above all, democratic Europe. “And you can only get that mix from us Greens,” he emphasized. Government members Leonore Gewessler and Johannes Rauch and club boss Sigrid Maurer were also present.
Call to the ÖVP
Ines Vukajlović and Thomas Waitz, numbers three and two behind Schilling on the Greens’ list, also had their say. Vukajlović praised the weeks of the election campaign as an “incredibly intense, inspiring and truly wonderful time.” Waitz, in turn, primarily attacked the ÖVP, which has allied with right-wing extremists against the protection of the environment, species and climate. His call: “Stop supporting the fascists!”
