Minutes of the U-committee in Vienna show: Governor Markus Wallner put his little memory hole in perspective with the advertising battle in just seconds.
Did Markus Wallner really just say he can’t remember advertising? The confusion among the public was still great during the six-hour interrogation of the governor on 1 June in the U-committee in Vienna.
It soon became clear to the FPÖ: Wallner had definitely wedged ads. Although he had always denied this in the run-up to the commission, once he was obliged to tell the truth, he could no longer remember it. The classic, so to speak, for anyone who has something to hide…
confusion among listeners
No one was able to reproduce the exact wording on the day of the commission. Numerous debates on the Rules of Procedure – initiated by the ÖVP – were followed by numerous questions from Reinhold Einwallner (SPÖ). The governor—under heavy fire—started to swing. When asked if he had ever advertised in the Wirtschaftsbund-Zeitung, Einwallner replied, “I don’t remember any of that.”
Einwallner then went on to ask if anyone from Wallner’s circle had advertised. And with the following answer, the VP state party leader completely downplayed the first statement: “I can’t rule that out for others, but I can rule it out for myself personally,” he said just seconds later. Obvious answers look different!
