It was a ‘Krone’ report that caused quite a stir. An asylum seeker from Lower Austria contacted his lawyer because he could no longer buy ‘everyday goods’ online with a debit card. FPÖ state leader Udo Landbauer reacted with strong criticism. Now the refugee has been relocated.
As reported, a legal dispute has developed in the “card pilot country” around the provision of cash to an asylum seeker. Because he could no longer buy “everyday goods” with the card on online platforms, the asylum seeker – reportedly – contacted his lawyer.
“Unlawful restriction”?
Lawyer Thomas Trentinaglia sees an “illegal restriction of basic services” in the payment card and wants to “take full legal action” in the worst case. In the meantime, the asylum seeker was transferred from Traisen in the Lilienfeld district to Mitterndorf in the Tulln district on Monday.
This is confirmed at the “Krone” in the office of the responsible asylum council member Christoph Luisser. “In this way, we are depriving asylum seekers of their money. We do not want to have economic refugees here looking for cash. We want to make Lower Austria as unattractive as possible as a destination for asylum seekers,” Luisser explains. According to Luisser, until the natura card is rolled out across the state, scheduled for November, only the natura card option will be available for self-sufficient or fully-catered neighborhoods.
