Towards the end of the US presidential election, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump battled for the final decisive votes in key swing states such as Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Michigan. According to Trump, America is in decline and he has been waiting for this day for four years. His Democratic opponent Kamala Harris is combative.
While Harris focuses on unity and overcoming divisions in the country, Trump paints a bleak picture of America and announces tough measures. Before once again announcing the “largest deportation in history” for “illegal migrants,” he announced: “I have been waiting four years for this day.” His audience in the city of Reading cheers on the 78-year-old.
As is known, Trump lost the 2020 election to incumbent Joe Biden, but to this day he does not acknowledge his defeat. Polls show Trump and his opponent nearly neck-and-neck, and the race remains unpredictable.
Harris: “We’re not going back!”
Kamala Harris, on the other hand, called for solidarity and finding solutions almost at the same time. “I don’t consider people who have a different opinion than me as enemies,” the 60-year-old said in the city of Allentown. “We’re not going back!” she chanted. Behind her are America’s super celebrities: Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Co. have spoken out in support of Harris.
Harris tried to get young voters, Latinos and Arab Americans on board during the election campaign, while in her last appearance she tried to avoid mentioning Trump’s name.
Trump hopes for a victory in the most important swing state of Pennsylvania – where 19 electoral votes are up for grabs – and continues to claim that he can only lose through fraud. Both candidates are focused on messages designed to appeal to their core voters.
Millions of votes already cast
Millions of voters have already cast their votes before the big election day on November 5, partly by post or at early polling stations. Democrats in particular benefit from early voting, although many Republicans also voted early.
Despite the large number of votes already cast, the election result may not become final until Wednesday morning (CET) at the earliest or even days after the election due to the complex counting process.
The last time the House of Representatives elected the president was in 1824 based on the constitutional amendment passed in 1804. At the time, the majority of parliamentary delegations voted for John Quincy Adams, with rival Andrew Jackson losing. If the procedure takes place two centuries later, the loser will not simply accept this.
Elections have an impact on Europe
The elections have far-reaching international consequences, especially for Germany and Europe. A Trump victory could call into question US support for Ukraine and its commitment to transatlantic alliances, which could have significant implications for security and economic relations.
