The French government lost a vote of no confidence in parliament on Wednesday evening and was thus overthrown. Both the left and right camps voted against the centre-right government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier.
288 votes were needed, this limit was easily exceeded with 331. When the result was announced in parliament in Paris, Barnier nodded, according to the Reuters news agency, but otherwise showed no emotion.
President Emmanuel Macron was not voted out during the vote of no confidence. The reason was a dispute over the state budget and Banier’s austerity plans. The former EU commissioner led a minority government based on the Ensemble party alliance, founded by President Macron and the Republicans.
It is the first time in more than sixty years that a government in France has been toppled by a vote of no confidence. The cabinet can remain in place temporarily for day-to-day affairs. The second largest economic power in the EU now faces political chaos.
